That thing you do/say

I am back with a "bang"…and unlike people who just make hollow claims I’m carrying proof…see picture alongside.[For those who haven't quite warmed up to the bengali language here's the hint...bang stands for frog in bengali.]
Now whether the phrase was supposed to mean something else I won’t be able to clarify.
Some phrases have always eluded my comprehensive faculties…so have some hoardings. I vividly remember a Trinamul congress hoarding claiming that to ensure Mamata Banerjee’s political success we should "Please press this bottom". Now, no matter what one’s political sentiments I am pretty darn sure that of all the "bottom"s that people would like to press, her’s is obviously not one. Then there is the hoarding at Park Circus 7-point crossing that claims that one is headed for the E.M.Bye-Pass. I can only marvel at the interactive value of the hoarding that waves goodbye to those accessing the bypass.
Another sign that baffled my limited intellect was outside a restaurant named "Mughal Khazana" which claimed to sell the best Chinese food in town.
Then there are some things that people say. From a friend who spent the better part of last year in Sussex, I heard this absolute gem that I can’t help but bring up here. He happened to visit a saree shop in a locality there which was mostly inhabited by Indians. Now, a British lady who had walked into the shop was being left unattended for quite some time which ultimately led the shop owner to bark out at his salesman, "Oy, kya kar raha hai? Foreigner ko saree dikha jaldi" [Translation: Hey, what the hell are you doing? Show the foreigner some sarees.] A Britisher being called a foreigner in Britain itself is probably the height of irony. Now, if the English were ever taught a lesson for their colonialism this was it. . [By the way, talking of colonial slaps, read http://greatbong.net/2006/12/10/dhoom-ii-the-review/ from the Greatbong’s blog].

More of this to follow…
